Vocabulary

These are some vocabulary words found throughout chapters 19-24. Beside each of the words, there are 1 or 2 synonyms for the vocabulary word being defined.

Fantastic- (syn. Marvelous)- conceived or appearing as if conceived by an unrestrained imagination; odd and remarkable 

Tension- (syn. Stress)-mental or emotional strain; intense, suppressed suspense, anxiety, or excitement 

Immerse- (syn. Submerge)-to involve deeply; absorb 

Fatal- (syn. Deathly)-causing or capable of causing death; mortal; deadly 

Petulance- (syn. bad temper)-irritable, impatient, or sullen in a peevish or capricious way  

Ghastly- (syn. grim, gruesome)-shockingly frightful or dreadful; horrible 

Clenched- (syn. seize)-to grasp firmly; grip  

Unflinchingly- (syn. brave)-not flinching; unshrinking: unflinching courage 

Shrugged- (syn. gesture)-to raise and contract (the shoulders), expressing in difference, disdain, etc… 

Borne- (syn. produce)-a past participle of bear 

Babbling- (syn. speak, talk-foolish or meaningless chatter; prattle: the constant babbling of idle gossips 

Acrid- (syn. cutting)-sharp or biting to the taste or smell; bitterly pungent;irritating to the eyes and nose 

Exertion- (syn. application)-vigorous action or effort: physical and mental exertion 

Gingerly- (syn. cautious)-with great care or caution; warily

Parched- (syn. thirsty)-to make extremely, excessively, or completely dry, as heat,sun, and wind do 

Ponderous- (syn.awkward)-awkward or unwieldy  


Remorseless- (syn. ruthless)-without remorse; merciless; pitilss; relentless 


Lapse- (syn. pass)-an accidental or temporary decline or deviation from an expected or accepted condition or state; a temporary falling or slipping from a previous standard  


Prostrate- (syn. bow)-to cast (oneself) face down on the ground in humility,submission, or adoration 

Sprawled- (syn. lie)-to sit or lie in a relaxed position with the limbs spread out carelessly or ungracefully
